Mike Johnson’s Hickory Toyota confirmed his passing in a statement shared on its official Facebook page. While the dealership did not disclose a cause of death, it described Johnson as “a family man, class act” whose vision and leadership transformed the company over more than two decades.
Johnson arrived in Hickory in 1999, purchasing the dealership then known as Larry Smith Toyota. Under his leadership, the business expanded into three dealerships employing more than 300 people. A 1981 graduate of the University of Tennessee at Martin with a degree in business management, he was also a three-year football letterman. He began his automotive career in Jackson, Mississippi, before joining Southeast Toyota Distributors in 1988, where he advanced through several management positions.
His contributions extended well beyond the automotive industry. Johnson was North Carolina’s 2017 TIME Dealer of the Year nominee and received the prestigious North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2025. He also served civic organizations, including the Rotary Club of Hickory, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, and numerous local charities.
